Message from the President

As we approach another Annual General Meeting, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our accomplishments and express my gratitude to all of the people involved with the YWCA Westman.  It is with immense pride that I share this message as the President of the Board.

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the unwavering commitment and dedication of our staff, board, and advocates. The tireless efforts of each and every person have made a profound difference in the lives of women, children and families that are experiencing intimate partner violence. Through compassion, empathy, and support YWCA Westman is a safe haven for those that have faced unimaginable challenges. The contributions, both big and small, have transformed lives and given hope to those who needed it most.

In the past year, we have had a lot of challenges and we have had to make some tough decisions. However, we have also had some major accomplishments and moments of celebration. This year we ran our first “The Strength in Me” event, an event for youth that provided a safe place for discussion, sharing and activities. We were excited to welcome 35 students to this event.  Additionally, we ran a beautiful Women of Distinction Event that honored some fabulous women from the Westman area.

We had over 200 community members in attendance, and we had a total donation value of close to $25,000. We also welcomed our new Executive Director, Lois Ruston. Lois comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge, and we are very excited for the future of our organization under her lead.

None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our funders, donors, and community partners. Your continued belief in our mission and financial contributions have been instrumental in sustaining and expanding our programs. Together we have created a network of support that extends far beyond the physical walls of our shelter.

Looking ahead in the coming year, we remain committed to our mission and our vision. We will continue to advocate for policy changes that protect survivors. We will strive to build stronger collaborations in the community that address the systemic issued that contribute to gender-based violence. We will work relentlessly to ensure that everyone who seeks our help finds the safety, healing, and empowerment that they deserve.

With our new Executive Director, Lois Ruston at the helm, we are excited about the future of our organization. On behalf of the entire board, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone for your unwavering support. Together, we are making a difference one life at a time. May the coming year bring us renewed energy, boundless opportunities, and a steadfast commitment to our mission.

With sincerest gratitude,

Message from Executive Director

As I write this message, I have been in the role of Executive Director with YWCA Westman for 2 months.  In that time, I have been welcomed by a board of women who are smart, strategic and aren’t afraid to make tough decisions while asking for help along the way.  I have learned about the incredible work that our team does, day in, day out, 24/7/365, with authenticity and grace.  I have seen the kind and thoughtful generosity of our community who support our clients in so many quiet, yet meaningful ways.  And above all else, I have met women who have incredible stories to tell.  Stories of pain, trauma, violence, and loss, which have, over time, evolved into stories of strength, empowerment, healing, and growth.

YWCA Westman does very important work.  We are a small, but mighty organization that is dedicated to supporting those marginalized by gender, and their children, providing shelter and security as well as support in re-building their lives.

President of YWCA Westman Board of Directors”

2023 marks a turning point for our organization and will allow us to build a foundation from which we can launch into a future that will create opportunities for our team, our community and most importantly the clients that we serve.  There will be many changes and new beginnings, and with that the important task of looking back through our 116-year history, honouring where we have come from and those who have built the organization into what it is today.  We will never forget our past, and we will lean on our history to find footholds that will help us climb to new heights, and a meaningful space for our organization with fresh, and rekindled partnerships.

While unable to comment on the programs and information included in the pages of this report for the year that was 2022, I can share, without a doubt, the deep gratitude that I have for being chosen to lead this organization into the future, and the excitement that I feel for the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.  If you have been involved in the past, thank you for sharing your time and talents with us, and I can assure you that we will have many jobs that we will need your help within the months and years to come.  If you haven’t been involved before with the YWCA Westman, I hope you will join us on our journey forward, it will change you for the better.

Looking forward to the year ahead,

Lois Ruston
